FlashWorks is a vocabulary drilling program. Each word is tagged for difficulty, type (noun, verb, etc.), chapter, and frequency in the Biblical text. You can then ask for any cross section you wish, such as "all verbs occurring more than 30 times in the New Testament that occur in chapters 16 through 24 in the text and which I have tagged with a difficulty rating of three through five" (five being the most difficult for you). FlashWorks remembers words as you get them right and/or wrong and can automatically set the difficulty rating. There are databases for Greek (Basics of Biblical Greek), Hebrew (Basics of Biblical Hebrew) and other languages.
Thank you to those who have donated to help cover the costs of keeping FlashWorks current. The software costs are about $750 a year.
For support, please visit FlashWorks's Facebook page.
Finally, here it is. A tremendous amount of work has been done under the hood, but there are a few major changes you will see.
1. The application installs into your system application folder (inside the Teknia directory), and the data files install in your user Documents directory (inside the Teknia directory). This should take care of most of the crashes that have been reported, as they were due to permissions issues.
But this means that the first time you start FlashWorks, you will have to tell it where the databases are. Use the "Saved preferences" window to remember their location.
2. It's alive! Well, at least it can talk. This was the number one request I received. You will need to download the appropriate audio files (below).
3. The database has been corrected for the third edition of Basics of Biblical Greek. The other databases are the same.
4. If anyone out there is good at making application icons and would like to contribute to the project, please let me know.
Please read the following. You can also watch a demonstration on YouTube. (Macintosh | Windows, by Micah -- thanks).
Download and install FlashWorks 4.5.1 (Mac | Windows).
To install FlashWorks, double click on the Installer and follow the prompts.
The installer loads the application, both Greek and Hebrew databases, and the text files for all the languages we have. If you have trouble finding the application or data, here are screen shots of their location.
Windows: If the installer doesn't load the font properly, here is a font installer (Greek | Hebrew).
The Greek is keyed to Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek, and the Hebrew is keyed to Pratico's and Van Pelt's Basics of Biblical Hebrew. The other databases were done for us and we do not know the source of the words or definitions. If you create other databases and would like us to post them, then please contact us through our Contact page.
Macintosh: The installer will put the audio files into the default location (~/User/Documents/Teknia/FlashWorksData). This video shows how to install the audio and make it active.
Windows: The downloads are zipped files of the "audio-greek" or "audio-hebrew" directory. You will need to move them to the same location as the database.
Click here to see screen shots of how the data should be stored on your computer.
Remember that you have to turn the sound feature on. Go to the Saved Preferences, to the Other tab, and decide whether to hear the word and/or meaning. These instructions are also contained in the download.
Here is a basic YouTube Video Help on how to get the most from FlashWorks.
If you want one of these databases to open automatically when FlashWorks starts, then set it as the default database in the Saved Preferences window (click here for instructions).
If you want to create your own database starting with the text files, you can read the instructions or watch it on YouTube.
If you get an error about a Vexception when you first access the database, click here for instructions.
